Understanding AI Temperature

This lesson introduces the concept of temperature in AI workflows and generative systems. The temperature parameter usually ranges from zero to 1.0 or higher and controls how much an AI system is allowed to deviate from the probabilistic outcomes naturally tied to its training data. By setting a low temperature (closer to 0), users can limit the AI, causing it to behave predictably, stick faithfully to instructions, and provide consistent results. Conversely, setting a higher temperature (like the default 1.0) enables the AI to choose more creative and less-likely responses, which is ideal for brainstorming text. Finally, the lesson highlights the dangers of pushing the temperature too high—such as 2.0—which actively increases the likelihood of meaningless hallucinations.
